The Reading Date

Hello fellow book lovers! I'm Lucy and I blog about books, audiobooks and movies at The Reading Date. I'm testing the waters over here to see how it goes. What are you reading?

Prophecy of the Sisters (Prophecy of the Sisters Trilogy, Book I)

Prophecy of the Sisters - Michelle Zink Lia and Alice Milthorpe are twin sisters who have just lost their father in a suspicious death. A strange mark then suddenly appears on Lia’s hand and a mysterious book is found in her father’s library. So begins Lia’s investigation into the prophecy that has plagued their family. The girls were always protected from the secret of the prophecy by their parents. Now that they are orphans, the prophecy secret is out. This was the perfect kind of book for me to kick off Fall reading. Prophecy of the Sisters is spooky, dark and mysterious. The setting in gorgeous Victorian New York is a perfect backdrop to the story. The writing is descriptive and lovely and pulled me in to the story with a good mix of mystery and supernatural aspects.Lia is an intelligent, strong and brave protagonist. In addition to grieving for her father, she also has to manage the tense and increasingly frightening relationship with her sister Alice. Lia and Alice also have a 10 year old brother Henry who becomes involved with the secrecy of the prophecy. James is Lia’s love interest, however there is not a lot of romance in the book.Although I enjoyed this book, my one complaint is the very slow pace. The story is engrossing, but it takes awhile to get to the action. Overall the mood and tone of the story won me over. I hope to learn more about the other characters in the sequel, especially about the “evil” sister Alice. This book is a great set up for the series, and leaves a lot of interesting questions for book two. I’m glad I can read the first two books back to back, otherwise I could not stand the suspense! Book two of the trilogy is Guardian of the Gate.
